USB Cell Phone Drivers – Use your phone to connect to the internet

AKA: How to use your phone to connect to the world wide web, general internet, email and etc.?

The long and short is this:

(THESE INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR VERIZON WIRELESS CELL PHONES TO ACCESS THE INTERNET.  Your network might work differently.)

1. Buy the right cable to connect your phone to the PC from ebay

2. Come here and download the right driver for your phone

 3. Create the Dial Up connection.  For Windows do the following.

  1. My Computer
  2. Select My network places (look on the left for the link)
  3. Select View network connections (also on the left)
  4. Click Create new connection
  5. Choose Connect to the network at my workplace (this is the one that says VPN in the description.  That’s what you want.  Select it and click NEXT.  DO NOT SELECT “CONNECT TO THE INTERNET” IT WON’T WORK.
  6. Then choose Dial Up Connection.
  7. Type in a name you will remember.  Call it “Cell Phone” or “Verizon” or whatever and click next.
  8. Enter the correct phone number – for Verizon this is #777

4. Go to “Network connections” and double click on the dial up link you just created.

5. Enter VZW for both the username and password

6. Save it and dial.

You should be in.  Your connection will be lost if you don’t use it frequently and you’ll need to dial out again.

This driver list was snagged directly from http://hk.smscaster.com/download_driver_usb_data_cable.htm

That way it won’t be lost when I need it later… So, now I can use my laptop and get online through my cellphone from anywhere – at no extra charge (beyond the use of my free minutes). It’s not FAST broadband but it is fast enough to support a remote desktop session to my home PC. Dropping down to 256 colors makes it work even better.

On verizon, setup a dial into a VPN make the phone number #777 and the password & username should be VZW. TBH I don’t think the username and PW matter.

If you use a USB data cable as the link between the PC and mobile phone, you need to install the Windows driver for the USB data cable. Most mobile phones come with a CD which contains a bunch of software, including the driver that you want and a software suite that you may not be interested in. But the truth is that it’s all or nothing: There’s no way to install just the driver only.Sometimes, the software is outdated, causing you trouble in getting your USB data cable and mobile phone recognized by the computer. In this case, you need an updated driver for the USB data cable. Here’s an updated list of USB data cable drivers for free download. The drivers are from various mobile phone manufacturers.

Looking for a free download of Qualcomm QPST 2.7? Look no further.

I’ve found Qualcomm QPST 2.7 build 215 available for download here.

QPST is a in-house cellphone manufacurer utility program that is used to edit many of the cell phone features that are not editable in any other way.

It was never meant for public consumption, so you can’t buy it anywhere, but it is in wide use. The reason it isn’t for everyone is that it is VERY powerful. You can destroy your phone at the click of a button and your cellular manufacturer will be under no obligation to fix it. If you don’t have a couple hundred dollars available that will allow you to replace your phone at full retail cost, don’t run this program.

You can do most things you might want, like uploading MP3’s to your phone or downloading pictures, through the somewhat safer program BitPIM. That program is available for download from SourceForge at the site http://www.bitpim.org/.

Performing a reset on your Verizon LG phones isn’t hard e.g. LG vx5200 and LG vx8100

[CLOSED TO COMMENTS]

So you changed some setting on your phone and now you don’t know how to fix it? Have no fear, there is a simple process that can restore your phone to the default settings:

  1. Click OK/Menu
  2. Click right twice to get to the Settings and Tools Menu
  3. Click down until you get to the System (this is 5 on a 5200)
  4. Click down until you get to the Security (this is also 5 on a 5200)
  5. Enter your lock code. If you have not customized it, this is the last for digits of your phone number.
  6. Click Reset Default
  7. You’ll see a message that says “Reset Default: Preference settings will be set to factory defaults. Press OK to continue.” You know what to do here…

I’ve not done this on my phone. I like my settings. But I’m told that this will NOT remove the custom rings you have uploaded on your phone AND there is a seperate menu item for deleting contacts. So, I don’t think it will remove your contact information either BUT I cannot guarantee this. Choosing this option MIGHT remove all of those settings.

If someone reading this follows these instructions, please let me know, in a comment, what is cleared and what is not.

Make your Verizon cell phone safe! Set the Emergency numbers!

Your cell phone can be configured with up to three emergency numbers that work for your area. 911 is now pretty common in the US but it was not always so. There still may be areas that don’t use 911 but use a different number. In anycase, you set three numbers that ALWAYS work wether the phone is locked or not. One should be your equivelent to 911. The second number in your phone is, by default, 611. 611 is the universal phone company repair service. It is also used on many colleges as the campus police number. So, some people will be used to calling it. The third number *611 will get you directly to verizon’s customer service. So, if you lock your phone you can call them and ask them how to unlock it 🙂 plus someone should always be there eventually…

Anyway, wouldn’t it be MUCH more useful for you to have the local fire department number as one that you or your kids can dial even if the phone is locked? Or maybe your spouse’s phone?

Anyway, changing these number is probably a pretty good idea and here’s how to do it:

  1. Click OK/Menu
  2. Click right twice to get to the Settings and Tools Menu
  3. Click down until you get to the System (this is 5 on a lg vx5200)
  4. Click down until you get to the Security (this is also 5 on a lg vx5200)
  5. Enter your lock code. If you have not customized it, this is the last for digits of your phone number.
  6. Click Emergency #s
  7. You’ll see a message that says “Reset Default: Preference settings will be set to factory defaults. Press OK to continue.” You know what to do here…

How to unlock your LG vx 5200, 6000, 8100, 9800

One of the major problems I have with my vx5200 phone is that it takes hundreds of pictures of the inside of my pocket…

Right now I only have one solution for this: Lock the keypad.
However, I was expecting it to unlock by pressing Menu * like my old (I-didn’t-know-how-good-I-had-it-when-I-had-it) Nokia phone.

Now however, with the new Verizon menu system on all of their LG phones, my lg5200 did not unlock the same way… After trying all logical four digit number combinations I could think of in 15-20 minutes, (1234, 4321, 1111, 2222, 5432, 6543, 0000) I stopped and thought “OK – if it is not a number pattern, it is a specific number. What specific number is associated with this phone…”

Well the answer is obvious… The unlock code for Verizon phones is….

Drum roll please……..dddddddddddddddddddd

The answer is The last four digits of your phone number.

How to play MP3s on a Verizon LG vx8100

Verizon tries to force you to only play WMA files on your phone. But because they’ve left their security menu open, you can reenable mp3 files.

Here’s how:
1. First Press Menu
2. Look at the menu if you want, but we’re gonna a hidden option: 0
3. After you press 0, you get asked for the service code password. Enter 000000.

Your now in the “secret” service menu. Be careful – you CAN screw up your phone from this menu..
4. Scroll down to and select “11. Music Setting” Note that this is specific to the vx8100 service menu. On the vx5200, this is Battery test.
5. Then select mp3 enable,
6. Press OK and your phone will probably reset.

You can now play MP3 AND WMA music files…

My wife will be very happy when she sees I’ve “fixed” her phone…

Two Secret Verizon Phone Menus – LG VX5200, LG VX6000, LG VX7000, LG VX8100 etc phones

This one is pretty straight forward but is the key to doing a lot of stuff that Verizon has disabled by default for their phones…

1. First Press Menu
2. Look at the menu if you want, but we’re gonna chose an option that isn’t available there: 0
3. After you press 0, you get asked for the service code password. No problem, it is all zeros! Enter 0,0,0,0,0,0 for the service code.

Your now in the “secret” service menu. Be careful – you CAN screw up your phone from this menu..

And there is another secret menu from here!
4. Press #, another hidden option, and you will enter the TEST MODE menu and from there you can do all kinds of cool stuff!
