I’m being flooded by a MoveOn.Org Bot???
OK, this month the most common visitor to this site is Mailer.HipHopCaucus.net with almost 642 visits during the first 10 days. You’ve probably not heard of the Hip Hop Caucus, but even if you have, they seem to be totally unrelated to HipHopCaucus.net!
HipHopCaucus.org is a lobbying organization following along the lines of The Black Caucus.
It’s registered as follows:

And as you can see that is TOTALLY unrelated to hiphopcaucus.net which seems to be a site that is riding on the fame of the HipHopCaucus in order to quietly do who-knows-what. Whatever it is it seems to require an unannounced bot to cache websites.
So, who is James Rucker and why is the mailer server so interested in this site? I don’t really know. But I have found that James Rucker and that phone number are associated elsewhere and that James Rucker has been labled a “Black Activist” and is associated with MoveOn.org and is a co-founder of ColorOfChange.org, a site where skin color is of upmost import and is used wonderful leverage for donations used for anti-Bush, anti-Repuplican propaganda. All in support of Black folk (Oh, and there were probably some poor old, white people that will be supported too. Yes, the emphasis was mine but the capilization was not.)
Here’s his bio:
James Rucker
James Rucker, 36, served as Director of Grassroots Mobilization for MoveOn.org Political Action and Moveon.org Civic Action from the fall of 2003 through the summer of 2005, and was instrumental in developing and executing on fundraising, technology, and campaign strategies. Prior to joining MoveOn, James worked in various roles in the software industry in Silicon Valley: co-founded and leading Imana, Inc., an enterprise software company, in San Francisco, as well as providing management coaching and technology consulting for other start-up ventures. James is also passionate about school reform and issues of equity, and serves on the boards of two area schools. James grew up in Seaside, California and has a BS in Symbolic Systems from Stanford University.
James has been involved in search engines for almost a decade. So it is not surpising that he might be into site crawling now. It’s funny. Looking at him and reading his description, he seems like he might be a nice guy…
BTW though there is no www.hiphopcaucus.net page, but there actually is a http://Mailer.HipHopCaucus.net, which is just a domain parking page… (oops its gone now. It was one of those Search engine sink hole sites.)
It all seems fishy to me. If you are a reader coming in through hiphopcaucus.net, please let me know that you are legit. Otherwise, I’ll probably save the bandwidth and block that referrer.
And on that “Color of Change” thing, don’t get me wrong. Katrina is (and that’s is NOT was) a horrendous tragedy. People are still living in tents and did so through the entire winter. Just look at the site my wife and I host: http://www.purlsofhope.com, for supporting Angela Cole, and you’ll see some of the devastating pictures from only a month or two ago. Those people are still suffering as America whines about gas and readies itself for summer vacation. And all of this has less to do with color than with power and other synonyms like jurisdiction, unionized groups, money, and local politics.
Now, if you visit the PerlingtonProject.org site, you can also read about how corrupt the political system really is in the south and judge for yourself, using your mind and not just greedy emotions, whether or not it is simply a matter of Bush not caring for Black folk and deliberately causing the complete disaster and devastation we are witnessing, or if there may be some story here beyond race…
http://www.pearlingtonproject.org/update1.htm
“On Tuesday, October 11th, another [tractor trailer truck full of supplies] arrived – this one from Rev. Richard Clay and members of his congregation from Newnan, GA. As had happened on Sunday, residents gathered in the yard of the Mount Zion AME Church to unload and sort the goods. Of course, I had the permission of the current pastor, Rev. Fred Fields, to have the trucks unload there. However, on Tuesday, what was seen as hopeful to some was seen as threatening to others. Rev. Fields angrily approached and informed me that I was to have no further goods delivered directly to the people of Pearlington. He stated that all future deliveries “must” go to the school and go through their distribution center. He further stated that if I persisted, the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) would shut me down for not being an official distribution center and the goods would be taken to the school. I explained to Rev. Fields that it was my understanding that private citizens could indeed make private donations to other private citizens. It has been and is happening throughout the disaster zone with no repercussions. To be certain that I was hearing Rev. Fields clearly, I called-over some of the other church members and had him repeat his “warning” to them. Their reactions were strong and clear – as was their gratitude to the people of Newnan for their generosity. However, with a tacit understanding of how things still work in the far corners of the deep South, just before nightfall, four local women and I quietly lifted as many of the remaining cases of water and supplies that we could approximately 50′ over onto Mamma Sams’ private property, which borders the church yard. The goods were no longer on the property of the Mt. Zion AME Church; and, Rev. Fields, who is on the payroll of the distribution center, could go back and report that the goods were no longer on the property of his church.”
OK… I think I am off topic….
(I continued to be off topic here: http://www.thecodecave.com/article137)
Wow… a lot to read on this…
LOL – I kind of got drawn off topic there… But I was already bothered when it became apparent that that .net domain that had crawled me had been appropriated by someone that was not associated with the .org domain.
Then that ColorOfChange site just kind of got my goat. It’s cached as something very helpful but is very much a “You’re either one of us or you’re not even worth talking to and we’re gonna bring you down.” sort of place.
Intellectually, that bothers me. I’m too much of an engineer to enjoy a site that demands you just turn off your brain beat the war drums with them. I’m already lathered up on the “selective enforcement” issues involved with the illegal immigrant debate. A “selective persecution” of corruption site doesn’t help calm me down. 😉
Hey man, mailer.hiphopcaucus.net trolled through my site too.
The thing is that the referrers after the first hit – which was on a hate crimes issue (I blogged about the beating of gay performer Kevin Aviance (kind of weird how I have to qualify a beating with “the guy was gay” for it to count, right? But that’s New York, I guess) – reflected behavior as if the visitor was clicking through the various tags on my site. Like someone reading, not like someone crawling. Although I’m not sure about that, since I’m not familiar with the technology involved. And they DID go through a surprising amount of content …
Regarding ColorOfChange site. I won’t pretend to have read it or want to, but being surrounded by high-headed liberal “progressives” here in NYC, I’ll tell you that there are a LOT of people with that “you’re with us or you’re not worth my time” mentality. I think it’s self-destructive, and ultimately people with more inclusive mindsets will achieve their ends, while the people who practice that sort of revenge-discrimination won’t get done what they want to get done. In other words, that sort of “swallow my ideology or taste bitter contempt” mentality will breed itself out, Darwininan-style.
So, perhaps their bot is scanning for more rant material. A bot that goes out and surfs for blog topics isn’t that bad of an idea I guess… He seems to have the know-how to pull that off. I wonder what led them to my site. Up till this point I’ve tried to keep the site largely non-political. It is a distraction that hurts the mission to help people.
I’ve also decided not to look any more into the Color Of Change stuff. Other posts of pettitions and news letters that they’ve sent out are always on equaly narrow minded and often biggoted sites. I’m just gonna participate in my own little Stetson Kennedy Frown Campaign and disapprove of such base tactics.
this is james rucker. I accidently found this site while trying to resolve a dns problem. just to let you know, i helped rev yearwood, the founder of the hip hop caucus re-engage their online work. setting up hiphipcaucus.net was done to leave the existing site (.org) and infrastructure intact. you may not agree with our politics and views at colorofchange.org, but we are careful to thoroughly research everything we write and are about creating political change. we’re working to make sure that futue katrina’s don’t happen and that elected officials work in the interest of all americans. also, there should have never been a bot trolling from mailer.hiphopcaucus.net. that’s strange. that machine’s been since reconfigured so if there was something running, it should be dead now.
Greetings!
This is very interesting! I had a wonderful opportunity to interview Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. this past summer in Washington, DC during the time of the People Relief Fund Press Conference and Rally in June 2006 against FEMA about the extension of housing vouchers! Rev. Lennox, Jr. is a young passionate man of God with great purpose and destiny who is on fire for the rights of the Katrina Victims. It was so sad to go all the way to Washington, DC along with others to have the press conference and rally and there were not one representative from FEMA present. The Katrina victims came from Atlanta, Houston and New Orleans. It troubled me that America could be so compassionate but only for a season and then go back to business and forget about those who still who have not received money, housing, jobs or supplies.
I stumbled across this site looking for more information about Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr. I’m so glad to read the information that you had about hiphopcaucus.net. I never heard of the other site. It’s too bad about James Rucker piggybacking on Rev. Yearwood, Jr. vision. There’s something to be said about imitating others instead of just asking God what vision do you have for me?
